Students are responsible for a ring of cards that have the vocabulary words on one side and the definition on the other. These will be done in class, but if lost, they must be re-made during non-class time. These can be done on 3X5 cards, or even paper cut into smaller squares. There should be a separate card for each vocabulary word. One side has the word written and the opposite side has the definition. These words will be used for studying for the end of unit test, and will be turned in for a grade on the day of the test. The test will be in November so we will be adding to the rings as we go through the unit. The words on the rings are listed below.
Vocabulary words:
Hypothesis- A guess. What you think is true. It is not a question.
Observation- What you notice about something.
Evidence- Clues that point to the truth. Proof of your conclusion.
Conclusion- Using facts and evidence to make a statement. Looking to see if your hypothesis was correct.
Volume- The amount of space that an object takes up.
Area- Length times width. The flat space that an object takes up.
Perimeter- The added length of all outside edges. The rim (peRIMeter)
Buoyancy- When there is more matter in the liquid under where an object is touching than in the object itself.
Magnetism- a property of iron. When iron molecules are lined up, they are attracted to other iron molecules.
Weight- How much gravity is pulling on an object.
Density- How tightly packed molecules are in an object
Conduct- Matter that wants to help energy move and spread out.
Insulate- Matter that tries to stop energy from moving and spreading out.
Element- Matter broken down to its most basic form. Elements are listed on the periodic table. All things are made of elements or combinations of elements.
Compound- 2 or more elements that make up a molecule. The molecule had different properties than those of the elements that make up the molecule.
Mixture- When 2 or more separate molecules come together and keep their original properties.
5 signs of a chemical change - smoke, bubbles, color, odor heat.
