9/30/14 Tuesday Math- We are getting closer to the unit one test. We did a lot of review today. Thursday and Friday we will have centers that focus on individual needs, so now the students are showing which centers they don't need to attend, so they can focus on the areas they need more practice in. The AM math class has math box 1-8 due on Thursday and the PM math class has math box 1-8 due tomorrow.
Science- We should know why some things sink and why some things float.
9/29/14 Monday Math- We worked with decimal comparisons and proving our answers on a number line. The morning math class had time to put together their math portfolios and the afternoon math class had some time on the computers practicing their number and operation skills at the level they are each presently at.
Science- There is no science for the morning science group on Monday's. The afternoon science class paid attention to details and tried to notice things they don't normally take the time to pay attention to.
9/26/14 Friday Math- we ordered decimals and compared them. We practiced using and making number lines that would prove our comparisons. Science- Density is how tightly packed matter is. We used balance scales to compare the density of items that were different sizes.
9/25/14 Thursday Math- we did some work with a number line and comparing and ordering decimals. Math box 1-7 is due tomorrow.
Science - we read an article on fire ants and summarized the main idea of the article.
9/24/14 Wednesday Math- We went to the computer lab today to work on a decimal gizmo. We still have some students who are not able to log into the computer. Please contact the office, if you have not done so yet, so we can have all students participate. Math box 1-7 is due on Friday.
Science- we completed our Saving Fred activity and was able to get some periodic table bingo in today.
9/23/14 Tuesday Math- Rounding numbers was our focus but we went deeper than to just found. We had to answer questions that take deeper understanding than just rounding to the nearest tenths. We graded math box 1-6 which was worth 1 point if all problems were attempted and 0 points if not all were completed. Those who had all 16 possible points will be excused from math box 1-8 which is not due until next week. Math box 1-7 is due on Friday. Students who accomplished all 9 points on math box 1-5 are excused from doing Friday's assignment . The morning math group (Ms. Boehm's homeroom) were all given a summary of their math grade at this point. The papers need to be signed and returned or a note written in agenda or e-mail that lets me know that it was seen by a parent.
Science- We saved Fred today. While saving Fred we talked about the scientific method and practiced drawing and labeling science work.
9/22/14 Monday Math- Today was our last math class working on expanded notation. Those who do not yet understand will have small group help during interventions to help continue their progress. Mat box 1-6 is due tomorrow. I sent another message via Infinite Campus today to help clarify math boxes and what is expected.
Science- The afternoon science group should now know how about how molecules in solids, liquids and gasses are arranged..
9/19/14 Friday Math- We worked on reading and following directions while having to think about place value. Science- AM class made their periodic table bingo cards today. PM class does not have science on Fridays.
9/18/14 Thursday Math- We learned the divisibility rules for numbers divisible by 2,3,5, and 10. Science- AM class made their periodic table bingo cards.
9/17/14 Wednesday Math- Writing numbers in expanded notation. Math box 1-5 is due tomorrow.
Science- Getting to know the periodic table of elements. We had a contest using the elements to make words.
9/16/14 Tuesday- We graded math box 1-4 today. Math Box 1-5 is due on Thursday. Writing numbers so they are in the correct place value can be difficult so we had some practice today.
Science- AM science saw the Bill Nye video on Atoms. PM science started to learn more about atoms and the periodic table.
9/15/14 Monday Math - Rounding and place value was the theme for the day. Science - PM class saw a Bill Nye video on Atoms.
9/11/14 Thursday. Math- Rounding was the focus for today. We practiced rounding as a group and did some practice work on paper. Math Box 1-3 was graded and Math Box 1-4 is due on Monday. Those who scored 5 out of 5 points on Math Box 1-2 do not need to turn in Math Box 1-4.
Science- Wrapping up our focus on classifying.
9/10/14 Wednesday Math- We went to the computer lab today and took the NWEA MAP test. Math Box 1-3 is due tomorrow.
Science- We worked on classification (or sorting) today. We find that it is a bit harder than it looks!
9/9/15 Tuesday Math- back to the basics. Students solved problems showing the methods they are most comfortable with. As a class we looked at the different ways of doing our work and what they all have in common. Math Box 1-3 is due on Thursday. This is a math box grade and not a 1 point homework grade- so quality is important.
Science- AM- We saw advertisements and looked at the way we need to see through what they say and look for evidence. PM- Classifying items by their properties.
9/8/14 Monday Math- Persistence and Perseverance is the words for today. Working through problems even though they are not easy at first. Math box 1-1 is due tomorrow.
Science- PM We saw advertisements and looked at the way we need to see through what they say and look for evidence. AM class does not have science on Mondays.
9/5/14 Friday
Math We used arrays to find factors of a number and graded our first math box. Math Box 1-2 is due next week Tuesday.
Science-We made an advertisement for a common item at our desk (pencil, highlighter) to make people believe that it was the greatest one ever. Learning to find evidence and look through facts to not be "fooled" is important. We were seeing how easy it is to take something common and make it look wonderful.
9/4 /14 Thursday
Math- We took some pre-tests today. Remember that Math Box 1-1 is due tomorrow.
Science- Question all info0rmation you read. Just because it is written down or on line does not mean it is true. Use you logic and thinking skills and keep your mind open.
9/3/14- Wednesday- In math we sand a couple of songs (The comma-rena and We will spit on you) to help us with place value. Each student now has their math journal and the first math homework assignment is due on Friday. Math Box 1-1 should have all the information written on as to which problems are graded (the problem number is circled), How many points each problem is worth (+1, +1, etc. written in the box), and if that type of problem is on the test or not(A" T" written by the problem number) Math Box 1-1 is the first of a matching pair so it is worth 1 homework point if all problems are attempted and in class on Friday. The matching math box will be 1-3.
Science- We spent some time in science getting to know each other.
9/2/14- What a wonderful first day. We spent the morning attending centers around the school that helped us know how to Responsible, Respectful and Safe students at Pine Street. The only homework for tonight was for Mrs. Cross.
Science- We should know why some things sink and why some things float.
